My name is Kate von Bernthal. I live in Detroit, Michigan. I tend to think of myself as a music school dropout, except that I didn’t drop out of music school. Actually I have 2 degrees in classical saxophone. The dropout feeling comes from the fact that I haven’t quite figured out how to make my education work for me, and now I’m admitting it to myself. Scary as it is to move beyond a foundational part of my identity, I am finally free to figure out what does work for me. So here we are! Exploring and sharing and committing to deeper honesty in all my pursuits.
But, I am still a musician and always will be. I’m also a writer (sort of), bartender (part time), and mom. I try to approach everything I do with creative energy and quiet intention. I’m always looking to improve through diligent and curious practice.
Now that the purpose of this website has expanded beyond Kate-the-trying-professional-classical-saxophonist, I will be sharing about all parts of myself as I continue on this transformational journey that is life. So visit me here to enjoy/experience/judge/get inspired by all the good and bad things I create.
